Europe 3D Printing Medical Devices Market Size, Share, Trends, Analysis Regional Forecast to 2028

The Europe 3D printing medical devices market is expected to reach US$ 1,986.9 million by 2028 from US$ 642.6 million in 2021. The market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 17.5% from 2021–2028.
3D printing has revolutionized the creation of medical devices, offering significant advantages in terms of customization and complexity. This technology allows for the manufacture of devices with intricate geometries or features tailored to a patient's unique anatomy. While some devices are produced from standard designs in multiple identical copies, others, known as patient-matched or patient-specific devices, are generated directly from patient imaging data.
The choice of 3D printing technology hinges on several factors, including the intended use of the printed product and the printer's simplicity. Powder bed fusion stands out as the most prevalent technique for 3D printing medical devices due to its compatibility with various medical-grade materials like titanium and nylon.
One major benefit of 3D printing in medicine is the affordable and simple creation of patient-specific, tactile reference models from CT and MRI scans. These models offer physicians an invaluable additional perspective, enhancing surgical preparedness and significantly reducing the time and cost associated with actual operating room procedures. This translates to greater patient satisfaction, reduced anxiety, and shorter recovery times.
The emergence of new biocompatible medical 3D printing materials is further advancing the development of novel surgical tools and techniques, ultimately aiming to improve the clinical experience during surgery. Examples of 3D-printable tools include sterilizable fixation trays, contouring templates, and implant sizing models. These tools can be used to size implants in the operating room before the initial incision, saving surgeons time and boosting accuracy during complex procedures.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought about changes in medical device regulations. The European Commission postponed the transition from the Medical Devices Directive (MDD) to the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) to allow the medical device sector and Notified Bodies (NBs) to focus their resources on combating the virus. However, there has been no indication of a delay for the In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation (IVDR) 2017/246, set to take effect in May 2021. This places additional pressure on IVD manufacturers, who must adhere to the required improvements for IVDR compliance while simultaneously managing increased demand for diagnostic tests and the challenges of kit manufacturing and distribution during the pandemic.
Furthermore, the European Commission temporarily subjected the export of certain medical devices, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), to authorization. This could pose challenges for medical device companies with contractual obligations to supply devices to non-EU nations, though Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland are exempt from this authorization.
The continuous introduction of new features and technologies in 3D printing is expected to attract new customers and facilitate market expansion into emerging regions, thereby driving growth in the 3D printing medical devices market. The Europe 3D printing medical devices market, in particular, is projected to experience strong growth during the forecast period.
